In today’s polarized America, few frustrations have unified Virginians more than the mail.
And by “the mail” we of course mean the seemingly unending saga of spotty mail service that recently became synonymous with Virginia’s postal service.
In short, a nationwide overhaul of the system came to Richmond before it arrived in any other postal region. The plan, called “Delivering for America,” calls for centralizing mail delivery, prioritizing packages and reducing collections of first-class mail from rural ZIP codes, an initiative that critics believe will slow mail delivery overall.
Postmaster Louis DeJoy believes the changes are necessary, primarily because Americans send fewer letters and instead are receiving far more mail in the form of packages.
