Skin-printed e-tattoos offer accurate, comfortable brain monitoring [Video]

The standard electroencephalography (EEG) tests are a cumbersome process. Patients must sit still for hours, their heads covered in wires and sticky electrodes.

But now, scientists have advanced brain activity monitoring with a new technology: “e-tattoos.”

In the first-of-its-kind development, researchers have developed a liquid ink that can be printed onto a patient’s scalp to monitor brain activity in real time.

This technique can be used for brainwave monitoring and neurological diagnosis. Moreover, it could pave the way for more advanced brain-computer interfaces.

“Our innovations in sensor design, biocompatible ink, and high-speed printing pave the way for future on-body manufacturing of electronic tattoo sensors, with broad applications both within and beyond clinical settings,” said Nanshu Lu, the paper’s co-corresponding author at the University of Texas at Austin.
