MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphians are no strangers to potholes.
The City of Memphis reports crews filled more than 81,700 potholes this year.
City public works crews are using Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence to automatically detect potholes, using cameras placed on public works vehicles.
A city spokesperson says images gathered on public work trucks are reviewed for confirmation, and if approved, a 311 service request is created and the pothole is filled/repaired.
The city also says ML/AI is currently learning to detect broken curbs and gutters, clogged inlets, and tall grass.
Detections approved or denied will be recycled back into the mode to enhance ML/AI detection and sharpen the solution.
With heavy rains over the weekend, Action News 5 crews spotted several potholes in areas in Crittenden County, Memphis and in other areas. With colder temperatures expected in the new year, more potholes are likely.
