Kailua Beach Park dune restoration aims to revive its eroding shoreline | News [Video]

City and state officials announced a dune restoration project in Kailua Beach Park in response to the area experiencing significant beach erosion.

KAILUA, Hawaii (Island News) — City, state and community groups are collaborating in dune restoration efforts for Kailua Beach Park in response to the shoreline’s significant beach erosion.

The phased effort involves the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), State of Hawai‘i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL), Hawai‘i Sea Grant and future community groups. The restoration will focus on the Lanikai-side of Kailua Beach Park located between Ka‘elepulu Stream and Ocean Safety Lifeguard Tower 8B.

Safety issues that DPR crews accounted for last month in the stretch of the shoreline includes exposed tree stumps plus fallen and tilting Ironwood trees undermined by the eroded beach.
