When it comes to tipping, location matters.
A new analysis of this year’s restaurant trends by digital platform Toast reveals the best and worst states for tipping when ordering food.
For the analysis, researchers examined tipping rates from approximately 120,000 applicable restaurants on the Toast platform, where a tip was added to the order via a card or digital payment, from April 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024. Cash tips and transactions without tips were not included in the analysis.
The report found that the average tipping rate nationwide is 18.8%, as of the second quarter of 2024. People are much more likely to tip higher at full service restaurants, at an average of 19.3%. At quick-service restaurants, the average tipped is 15.9%.
Breaking it down by state, the report determined that Delaware is the best state overall for tipping, with a total average tipping percentage of 21.5%.
