The Chinese navy, which is the largest in the world by hull count, launched its first new-generation amphibious assault ship on Friday, equipped with an advanced catapult system that—similar to an aircraft carrier—supports the flight operations of fixed-wing aircraft.
Why It Matters
Last week, prior to the launch of CNS Sichuan—a Type 076 amphibious assault ship named after the southwestern province in China—the U.S. Department of Defense released its annual report on China’s military power.
According to the report, China has more than 370 naval ships and submarines, including three Type 075 amphibious assault ships that precede the Type 076. It said the Chinese navy “continues to develop into a global force, gradually extending its operational reach beyond East Asia” and seeking to operate at greater distances from mainland China.
