With tariffs looming as former President Donald Trump prepares to return to office next year, Virginia consumers are in the mood to spend more for the holiday season.
Roanoke College released a new survey on Tuesday that shows two-thirds of consumers ready to spend as much or more than a year ago as inflation has fallen and their wages have increased.
Consumers expect to spend more during the holidays primarily because their personal finances have improved, according to the survey of 716 Virginians, conducted between Nov. 11 and Nov. 16 by telephone interviews, text and online responses.
The average total holiday expenditure rose about $200 to about $1,100 from last year, and the percentage of consumers who expect to spend between $500 and $1,000 has risen about three percentage points.
